Coast Guard Day (August 4th)
On this day in 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard was formed when George Washington signed the “Tariff Act” that authorized the construction of ten vessels, called “cutters,” to enforce federal laws at sea and to prevent smuggling. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service and was officially named the “U.S. Coast Guard.”

Appellate Court Affirms Conviction for Maintaining False Oil Record Book in U.S. Waters
On December 7, 2021, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit affirmed the conviction of Nikolaos Vastardis, former Chief Engineer on the tank vessel EVRIDIKI, ruling that U.S. law imposes a duty on foreign flag vessels to ensure that their oil record book is accurate (or at least not knowingly inaccurate) when entering U.S. waters.
